President U Thein Sein of Myanmar meet State Councilor Dai Bingguo

   President U Thein Sein of Myanmar met with State Councilor Dai Bingguo, who came to attend the Fourth GMS Summit, on 19 December in Nay Pyi Taw.

State Councilor Dai Bingguo first conveyed the cordial greetings of President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao to President U Thein Sein, and saluted Myanmar for the successful preparations for the GMS Summit. He said that the Chinese government remains committed to the policy of friendship with Myanmar. He pointed out that the good-neighborly and friendly relationship between China and Myanmar, as a fine example of state-to-state relations developed on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, had withstood the test of time and history and become an invaluable asset of the two peoples. He expressed the hopes that the two sides would properly resolve the problems they had encountered in the course of cooperation through development and expanded cooperation so as to promote greater progress of China-Myanmar cooperation in various areas.

State Councilor Dai Bingguo said that China had always supported Myanmar in following the development path suited to its national conditions, given positive comment on the efforts and progress that the government of Myanmar had made in promoting political reconciliation at home and improving relations with foreign countries, and hoped that the international community wound create a sound environment for Myanmar's development. He stressed that China believes that the government of Myanmar has the wisdom and capability to address the challenges and problems on the road ahead and that a peaceful, stable, independent and prosperous Myanmar serves the common interests of China and Myanmar.

State Councilor Dai Bingguo pointed out that China is an active participant, a staunch supporter and a co-beneficiary of the GMS cooperation and that it wound continue to participate in the GMS cooperation with greater input and contribution. He emphasized that China would accommodate the interests of both the upper and lower Mekong countries, make joint efforts with the related countries to effectively conserve, use and manage this trans-border river and safeguard the safety in the shipping lanes so as to facilitate the development of the riparian areas and the improvement of people's livelihood there.

President U Thein Sein asked State Councilor Dai Bingguo to convey his cordial greetings to President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao. He said that the "paukphaw" friendship between Myanmar and China had a long history and the two countries had enjoyed frequent high-level dialogues, close people-to-people exchanges and friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation across the board, which had brought real benefits to the people of the two countries. He talked about the domestic situation in Myanmar and its foreign relations, expressed Myanmar's thanks to China for its firm support over the decades, affirmed its commitment to the smooth progress of the various cooperation programs between the two countries and stated that Myanmar would never allow any damage to bilateral relations with China. He expressed readiness to keep in close communication with China to promote the success of bilateral cooperation on energy, agriculture and major projects, so that the Myanmar-China comprehensive, strategic and cooperative partnership would grow from strength to strength.

On the same day, State Councilor Dai Bingguo attended, together with Dr. Sai Mauk Kham, Second Vice President of Myanmar, the inauguration ceremony of the new terminal building of the Nay Pyi Taw international airport built by a Chinese company.
