YANGON, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has built a total of 59,919 miles (95,870 kilometers) of motor roads across the nation so far, according to statistics of the Ministry of Transport Monday.
The 95,870 km roads include 81 union highways which stretch as long as 24,550 km -- 36 highways from the north to the south and 45 highways from the east to the west. The overall roads also include 52 inter-state or -division roads extending as 20,163 km. Other 4,609-km strategic roads were built by the State Public Works and military engineers. After cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in May 2008, the public works began implementation of a road network development project, building five roads in the southwestern Ayeyawaddy delta area and adding up to eight in the region. Moreover, to enable effective carrying out secure and smooth transportation, the state public works and a number of private entrepreneurs are also implementing road construction projects under "build, operate and transfer" system, the transport ministry said, citing 19 such roads so far being built by about a dozen giant private construction companies including Max Myanmar, Shwe Thanlwin, Olympic High Star, Kanbawza, Asia World, Yuzana Highway, Shwedaung Development and Thawdawin. |
