On Jan. 10th, Ambassador Li Jinjun attended the New Year Dinner hosted by Foreign Minister U Nyan Win for the Diplomatic Corps at invitation..
Foreign Minister U Nyan Win reflected the achievements that Myanmar has made in Year 2004 on politics, economic development and especially in diplomacy. He said that Myanmar has initiated steps for a systematic political transformation, taking the first step of the seven points Roadmap Plan towards Democracy, that is to convene the National Convention with the next session to be held in February this year; on economic development, Myanmar has made steady development while narrowing the gap between rural and urban areas with many new roads, bridges, dams, airports, schools and hospitals had been added to the existing infrastructure and the health and education standards of the entire nation been uplifted; on drug issues, Myanmar had destroyed drugs valued at more than US$14.5 billion in the last decade and thus won the acknowledgement from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes; as to the diplomatic work, Myanmar actively participated in various international and regional meetings such as the 10th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane and the 5th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Hanoi. Myanmar also hosted a number of important international meetings, including the meeting of the Mekong Countries on Human Trafficking (COMMIT), the meeting of the ARF Inter-Sessional Support Group on Confidence Building Measures and the World Buddhist Summit etc. Myanmar also achieved fast improvement in the sphere of bilateral relations with neighboring countries. The successful visit of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, together with visits of the Prime Minister to Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam further cemented good neighbourily relations. U Nyan Win ended his speech by wishing of full cooperation between Myanmar and all the other countries in the new year.
